Nothing is re-encoded: the pixels are copied as they are, so JPEG quality is untouched. Dropping the orientation flag as well can make a portrait photo appear sideways, so by default that one field is kept.

How to Use

About This Tool

Every photo from a phone or a camera carries a second layer of data next to the pixels: when it was taken, which device took it, and — if location services were on — exactly where you were standing. Post that file to a marketplace or a social account and the coordinates of your home or office can travel with it. This tool lists all of it and puts a red banner on anything with GPS. You can open the coordinates on a map to check them, and only that click sends the two numbers to an outside map service.

Removal happens without re-encoding. For JPEG the EXIF (APP1), XMP, IPTC and comment segments are dropped and the already-compressed scan data is joined back together; for PNG the tEXt, iTXt, eXIf and tIME chunks go; for WebP the EXIF and XMP chunks go and the VP8X feature flags are rewritten to match. The pixels are never touched, so re-saving costs you no quality. The ICC colour profile is kept by default, since removing it can shift the colours. Camera MakerNotes and the embedded thumbnail — which sometimes still shows the picture as it was before cropping — are removed along with everything else.

Reading, parsing and stripping all happen inside the browser; no image is sent to a server (once the page has loaded it works offline). HEIC files from an iPhone are not supported — export them as JPEG first, or use the Image Resizer or WebP Converter to produce a supported file.
